Jennifer Poulin

Canadian Conservation Institute
Senior Conservation Scientist
Jennifer Poulin earned a B.Sc. (Hons) in Chemistry from Acadia University in 1992 and a Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, specializing in gas chromatography, from Dalhousie University in 1995. She has worked in the analysis of natural products since 1996 and began work at the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) in 2003, where she is currently a Senior Conservation Scientist. She specializes in the analysis of organic components in museum objects using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). She developed a novel methodology for the identification of natural and early synthetic dyes on textiles using GC-MS, and this is a primary research interest for her. Her work also includes the characterization of Canadian amber, the identification of natural and synthetic paint-binding media; organic residues on archaeological objects; and natural varnishes and lacquers used as furniture finishes. She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, and is co-author of Jean Paul Riopelle: the Artist's Materials, the second book in the Artists' Materials series published by the Getty Conservation Institute.
