John Childs graduated with a BA in history from Yale University in 1985, and earned a master’s degree in conservation specializing in furniture from Winterthur in 1992. Since then John has worked at museums in New York City, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia, and from 2006 to 2011, he was the conservator responsible for all collections at Historic New England. From 1996 to 2006, John worked in private practice in Los Angeles, working for area institutions and private collectors. From 2009 to 2011, John was chair of AIC’s Wooden Artifacts Group. From 2011 to 2014, John was senior conservator/historic preservation specialist at Art Preservation Services, Inc. (Steven Weintraub, Principal) in New York City, where he was the project manager and primary consultant for conservation to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. In June of 2014, John became the first Head of Conservation Services at the 9/11 Memorial Museum. John is also an adjunct assistant professor in the Columbia University Historic Preservation Program, and has been a Lecturer at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts Conservation Center, teaching wood conservation at both institutions.
